Elon Musk made a shocking announcement on Twitter a few days ago that he will switch Tesla from batteries to hydrogen in 2024 after years of skepticism. He also mentioned that the first vehicle to arrive at fuel will be aptly called the Model H.

Musk has previously called hydrogen fuel cells "dumb batteries" and called the technology "incredibly stupid." Musk's 180-degree turn this time is believed to be due to terminal problems encountered in the mass production of 4680 batteries.

It is understood that the Model H will be between the Model X and Model Y in size and become another model in the "crossover" segment, which has become one of the most popular body styles on the market today. In typical Musk fashion, the Model H will feature groundbreaking features, with the headline feature being the "Hindenburg Mode" derived from SpaceX technology. This uses onboard hydrogen to provide a rocket-based flame speed boost, which will reportedly allow the Model H to hit 60 mph in just 1.2 seconds. That will quickly drain the range, though, with a WLTP rating of 451 miles and a more frugal driving style.

Tesla insiders claim the Model H will launch in 2025 with the much-anticipated Model 2, which will now also run on hydrogen, offering an expected 400 miles of range in the form of a compact hatchback. This will reportedly make hydrogen vehicles affordable, as they are currently more expensive than electric vehicles and more expensive to fuel than combustion engine vehicles.
