If an accidentally swallowed battery is not removed in time, the case may result in intestinal perforation and peritonitis. Gastroenterologist Alexei Paramonov told Vechernyaya Moskva about this, commenting on the news about a one-year-old girl who accidentally swallowed a disposable battery.
According to the doctor, the whole problem is in the device of the battery, inside the case of which there is alkali, an extremely corrosive substance that is dangerous to humans:
- And the chances that the battery will naturally come out on its own are few. That is, if an object of a similar size can be swallowed and wait until it comes out, then the battery is not like that: it must be removed as soon as possible. If a little time has passed, within an hour, then most likely it is in the stomach and you can get it with the help of a gastroscope. More than an hour - the battery has probably already entered the intestines and will require surgery to remove it. If nothing is done at all, then the matter will end with perforation of the small intestine and inflammation of the entire abdomen, that is, peritonitis. And this is already a very serious condition.
Recall that on the night of September 14, a one- year-old girl was admitted to one of the capital's hospitals - a child accidentally swallowed a battery. Currently, doctors are fighting for the health of the young patient
